Can I Wire A Plain Thermostat To A 2 Wire Heat Only Furnace? And If So What Connections Go Where?

I have a black wire and a white wire coming out of the wall but they are not labeled. I bought a cheap little thermostat with 4 connections R, W, Y, and G. The thermostat is for cooling and heating. Can I make this work? If not what do I need?

If you have a 24 volt thermostat, and 24 volts is what the black and white wire are providing, you should be in business if you connect the black wire to R and the white wire to W. Before you connect the thermostat be certain that the wall wires are NOT 120V. If they are high voltage (120V) it could be dangerous AND you could fry your new thermostat. Good luck.

Yes, it will work. The R & W terminal are the heat controls. The thermostat works like a switch, so wire color is not too important.
Some cool info at the site below.

Yes you can….you use the R and W connections doesnt matter which wire goes where…..check to make sure these are thermostat wires first…..once your sure they are hook them up and see if furnace works……
