I Bought A Rental House In Mich.city Wants Me To Pull A Permit On A 10 Yo Pre-existing Furnace. Is This Right?

The city building dept. wants me to pull the permit since they do not have record of a permit ever being pulled. They are actually requesting a lot of permits for what I would call pre-existing conditions. Is there something in the International Bld Code to manage this?

Are you saying they want you to apply for a permit for work that was done before the house was bought? NO WAY!!! First if thats what they want even if the work was done up to code, codes have changed and you’d have to upgrade to meet them, and since it prob. didn’t get permitted, it might not have been done up to code so you’d have to bring it up to current code NO WAY. Search BOCA or CABO online and see or just call another locality and ask them what to do see what they say. None of our localities here in VA do that kind of thing.

Ask the local mechanical inspector for the name and phone number of the Michigan State Mechanical Inspector in Lansing. Tell the local inspector that you want to clarify the situation with a higher authority. Most of the time, a local inspector will back down when confronted in this manner. A lot of them are not in the position because of what they know. They often attain their position because of local politics.
