Buying A Furnace – Furnace Buying Blog

New Part, Or Brand New Furnace?

Our heat stopped working a few days ago. The furnace is probably close to ten years old and is not a very top-quality one. Our home is approx 1500 sq ft. The repairman came out and checked everything, and said it needs a new valve. He said he wasn’t sure of the price of the valve, but said it could run a couple hundred. Our other choice is to get a brand new furnace (and of course he recommended the highly $$$ Trane furnaces).
I’m getting a quote on this new part, and I think a couple hundred for a very small part is outrageous, but if it is in fact expensive, is it better to just install a brand new furnace? We will be in this home for close to a year or so but after that will move. Any tips will be helpful!!

Can I Purchase Maintenance Policy For Future Gas Furnace Repairs?

Yes, most HVAC Service company’s offer service agreements for systems.

Pellet Stove Vent Installation?

I bought a pellet furnace and it came with a vent pipe the previous owner had used. It doesn’t work in my house as it’s not long enough. To make up the difference I was going to use a plain piece of 3″ galvanized single wall pipe. It’s just a 2ft section and isn’t near anything so any heat off of it wouldn’t hurt anything. Is it safe otherwise?

How Do I Know What Furnace Filter Is Best To Buy?

You pretty much get what you pay for in filters. If you have a lot of dust in your house or have allergies, go ahead and buy the 3M filtre. It lasts 3 months. Regular filters should be changed monthly, so the price isn’t that mush higher.

Which Is Better- Oil Or Gas Furnace?

Just curious- my husband and I are looking at a house to buy. It currently has an oil furnace- I’m assuming it’s very old. If it needs to be replaced, would it be better to switch to a gas frunace, and if so- is it an easy transition? What does the transition involve? Thanks in advance.
PS- We live in PA.

Where Are My Furnace’s Air Filters?

I have a Heil furnace, model NTC6050FBA1 and I cannot find the filter! I looked through the manual and where it says filters are supposed to be there aren’t any (well, not removable filters anyway.) However there are several sponge-like things glued throughout the furnace. I assume these are the not filters, but rather insulation for the furnace.
Is there some place I might be missing when I look, or is it possible that I bought a condo with a furnace missing its filters? I can’t even find a spot where a filter might go…

Is It Ever Appropriate To Solder Copper Tubing For Out-door Air Conditioning Units?

Had a contractor install a Central AC unit and he soldered the copper tubing leading from the unit (outside),,into our basement where it connects to our furnace (blower). Is there any industry guideline that still accepts this method of installation. I hear there is a more effective, efficient way of installing this without soldering the pipes

My husband and I recently bought a house from his grandmother and it had an old wood furnace in the house. We took that out because it was not safe. We expected to have the money for it but we do not. We even tried getting a loan, our house refinanced but we havent had the house long enough to do that. We are running out of options and im trying to find some kind of assistance, if anyone has an helpful information it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Is This A Good Price On Central Air Conditioning?

1500 square foot home, furnace is already equipped to accept, quoting for unit, pad, 50 foot tie in line, and installation plus 2 yr warranty….I don’t have the actual quote yet but was told ballpark 2k to 2400.

Should I Buy Heat Pump Or Ac/furnace?

I would go for a heat pump if you are in an area that does not get extremes of heat/cold.
A good place for a heat pump would be the Pacific Northwest, where a cold night might be about 15 degrees and a hot summer day is 95 or so.
They work less effectively in a very cold area like Montana or hot areas like Arizona.
On the plus side, they will cost you less to operate, and new models are about as maintenance free as separate AC/furnace units.
